Challenge

The MassCEC needed an efficient solar + storage design on their Wind Testing Technology Center (WTTC), but due to utility requirements, solar is not allowed to export.

Solution

HES provided a system design that allows the facility to fully self-consume the solar while also managing demand peaks.

Results

The WTTC is seeing significant reductions in their utility power bills and is meeting the utility non-export requirements.

HES and Sunbug Solar won the Massachusetts’ Clean Energy Center (MassCEC) RFP for a solar plus storage system at its Wind Testing Technology Center in downtown Boston. HES completed the full engineering design and commissioning for the system, and currently monitors and controls the battery system to ensure solar self-consumption and accurate peak load management.

The system consists of a 181kW-dc ballasted roof mount solar system using 153kW-ac of SolarEdge inverters AC-coupled with a 187.5kW/630kWh Tesla PowerPack 2. The system is controlled locally with Tesla’s Site Master Controller (SMC) and HES controls the SMC remotely through its ED-209 gateway. HES also provides a web app for the customer so they can view the battery and solar operations in real-time.
